7 Roofing Myths Texas Homeowners Still Believe

Some of these get repeated so often they start to sound like fact. Here are the Texas roofing myths our crews hear most, and what’s actually true.

Myth #1: “My insurance will automatically cover a full roof replacement after any storm.”

Reality: adjusters distinguish between cosmetic damage and functional damage, so not every hailstorm results in a payout for a full tear-off. It’s also worth knowing that many carriers now pay actual cash value not full replacement cost on roofs older than about 15 years, which can shrink a claim check by 40–60%. Understanding your policy’s roof-age provisions before a storm hits saves a lot of frustration after one.

Myth #2: “Dark shingles will wreck my AC bill in Texas heat.”

Reality: color plays a role, but it’s a smaller factor than most people assume. Attic ventilation and insulation quality do more heavy lifting for indoor temperatures than shingle color alone. Lighter, more reflective shingles can shave a little off surface heat, but a dark roof with proper ventilation will usually outperform a light roof with poor airflow.

Myth #3: “A metal roof will attract lightning.”

Reality: this one’s been debunked for decades. Metal doesn’t attract lightning any more than any other roofing material a strike follows the tallest, most conductive path to ground, not a specific material. If a metal roof is struck, it’s actually safer in one respect: it won’t ignite the way wood shake or some other materials can. If you’re weighing metal against asphalt for your next roof, our 2026 Texas roofing cost breakdown compares pricing by material.

Myth #4: “If it’s not leaking, my roof is fine.”

Reality: this is the myth that costs homeowners the most money. Hail bruising, granule loss, and cracked seals often show zero symptoms inside the house for months, sometimes not until the next storm finds the weak spot the first one created. By the time a ceiling stain shows up, you’re often looking at a bigger repair than if it had been caught right after the storm that caused it. This is exactly the pattern we see after hail, which we cover in more detail in ” Why Texas Roofs Take More Hail Damage Than Almost Anywhere Else.

Myth #5: “A good roof should last 25–30 years, so mine’s probably fine.”

Reality: that number comes from manufacturer lab testing, not Texas weather. North Texas alone can swing from over 100°F in summer to below freezing in winter, with repeated freeze-thaw cycles fatiguing fasteners and sealant in a single season. Add hail and constant UV exposure, and most Texas roofs age faster than their rated lifespan suggests. See our full breakdown of how Texas weather quietly wrecks a roof over a year.

Myth #6: “A roofer is a roofer anyone with a ladder can do the job.”

Reality: manufacturer certifications, correct fastening patterns for high-wind zones, and (in coastal areas) specific windstorm certifications all affect whether your roof performs  and whether your warranty stays valid. The cheapest bid and the best-installed roof are frequently not the same roof.

Myth #7: “I’ll deal with the minor damage after storm season.”

Reality: small breaches don’t stay small. A lifted shingle or hairline crack lets moisture in, and once water gets under the roofing system, it spreads  often into decking and insulation you can’t see. Waiting also gives insurers more room to argue that new damage isn’t related to the original storm.

These Myths Show Up All Over Central Texas

It doesn’t matter which of these seven you’ve heard, they follow homeowners into every roofing decision, from a first-time roof installation in Belton to a roof installation in Cameron, a roof installation in Copperas Cove, or a roof installation in Temple. The same bad advice also shows up when homeowners are trying to decide whether they actually need roof repair in Bartlett or just some roof maintenance in Cyclone to head off a bigger problem.
